Abdominoplasty

The five things to know about the tummy tuck

Excess skin and fat in the abdomen annoys you? Whether your reasons are aesthetic or functional, you might consider a tummy tuck. This type of cosmetic surgery can free your movements and make you look smooth and tense. Discover the five points you need to know about it!

1. When to perform a tummy tuck ?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that allows men and women to repair the damage their abdomen may have suffered. Be careful, abdominoplasty is not a solution to overweight: if you suffer from significant overweight, it is best to go on diet and stabilize your weight before approaching this intervention since the risks of infection and pulmonary complications are higher in case of obesity.

On the other hand, the tummy tuck is performed when the patient no longer bears the deformation of his abdomen or has difficulty in dressing. It can also be practiced in people with abdominal deformity hindering mobility, causing back pain and / or causing hygiene problems.

It is also important to note that abdominoplasty does not prevent from a future pregnancy. But to keep a good aesthetic result, it is better to consider such surgery when you no longer want a child. If, despite everything, you want a new pregnancy, you must be careful not to exceed the allowed weight gain and wait at least six months after the procedure.

2. What kind of intervention ?

The abdominoplasty is performed when the skin is too damaged, abundant, or not very flexible to practice a liposuction. Therefore, a more consistent intervention is required.

The abdominoplasty then consists of removing excess skin and fat, repairing the abdominal wall if necessary, transposing the umbilicus, and returning the desired shape to the abdomen. Liposuction can often be complementary to this procedure.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the intervention is plus or minus 2 hours. The administration of analgesics makes it possible to support the pain related to the abdominoplasty. For six weeks after the operation, the wearing of a compression sheath is prescribed. All the advice to choose your sheath will be, of course, given by the doctor.

A variant of this operation also exists, called the “mini abdominoplasty” reserved in cases of mild to moderate cutaneous excess, without transposition of the umbilicus, and associated to extensive liposuction.

3. The results we can expect

The abdominoplasty generally gives complete satisfaction to the patients, who find a new silhouette. The comparison before after a tummy tuck is obvious!

The sensitivity of the belly can be altered, but returns between 3 months and 1 year after surgery.

The final result of this is operation is observed from 3 to 6 months post operatively, with a long term evolution. If a correction is necessary, it can be realized 6 months after the intervention.

4. Financial aid by the mutual

In Belgium, abdominoplasties are sometimes reimbursed by the mutual. This requires that the medical consultant examines your file once the operation is completed. In addition, it must meet specific conditions: the excess skin must be linked to a significant and stabilized weight loss (20 percent of the original weight) that would also cause a functional impairment.

5. Choose an expert!

Contacting an expert is essential to get the best result.
